COMMENTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.  Our Reading today begins with Verse 15<\/a>, the first of eight verses of Dissuasion!  It conveys a very powerful statement, highlighting at its beginning a person\u2019s INITIATED intent\/ iraadah<\/em><\/a>, then showing us the worldly recompense for the fulfilled intention (having been proven by deeds.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It first shows how this particular initiated intent (iraadah<\/em>) happens to be directed towards the lowly, immediate life, \u2018al Hayaat al Dunya<\/em>\u2019 with all its embellishments\/ adornments\/ zeenah<\/em>,\u2019 then speaks of what every initiated intent would generate, which is deeds\/ actions\/ labor\/ a3maal.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we know, God is Just, and shall recompense each person for what they had intended, initiated, and thereupon accomplished.  If this lowly life happens to be the focus and ultimate aim of one\u2019s initiated intent\/ <\/em>iraadah<\/em>,, then the full recompense for one\u2019s labors shall be gathered for them here, in this life alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verse 16<\/a> follows, in that such persons get nothing in the Hereafter except fire, wherein all that they had earlier devised\/ fabricated\/ crafted  (\u0635\u064e\u0646\u064e\u0639)becomes painfully voided\/desolated.  We spoke of the word \u2018HabiTa\u2019(  [1]<\/sup><\/a>(\u062d\u064e\u0628\u0650\u0637earlier, showing how the Qur\u2019an mentions labors (\u0639\u0645\u0644\/ \u0623\u0639\u0645\u0627\u0644) getting painfully voided.  Here, interestingly this verse specifies that what shall be painfully voided is what they have devised\/ fabricated\/ Sana3a<\/em>\/ \u0635\u0646\u0639-[2]<\/sup><\/a> -quite a particular statement, because whatever one \u2018devises\u2019 has  necessarily been planned; it is a premeditated deed![3]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the verse adds a generality, which is that: Moreover, what they had earlier labored\/ worked\/ 3amal<\/em> (\u0639\u0645\u0644) is also gone, having been short-lived\/ temporary\/ baaTil<\/em> (\u0628\u0627\u0637\u0644).  This points to everything they had done in life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since they had not done anything for the Hereafter, they should not expect any recompense awaiting them there, especially since they had already earned their rightful reward upon this earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note that the ambition of such people did not extend beyond this life!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us always look forward and be ambitious, using this life as a stepping-stone towards the Hereafter.  This life and all its adornments are nothing but the means God placed here to serve us in pursuit of our ultimate aim: <\/em>\u0631\u0636\u0648\u0627\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647<\/em><\/a> \/ RiDhwaan Allah\/ God\u2019s Timeless Good Pleasure and Acceptance, always \u2018in the Now!\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.   <\/strong>Verse 17<\/a> compares those whose ambition is limited to this fleeting life with someone who is supported by clear evidence from his Lord.  Then the verse tells us that this evidence is being transmitted by a Witness from Him (a reference either to Prophet Muhammad, or to Angel Gabriel) and that before this, there was the Compilation of Moses, a Forerunner and a Mercy.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aside: It is interesting to note <\/strong>that the COMPILATION mentioned to have been \u2018BEFORE the Qur\u2019an\u2019 appears twice<\/a> as that of Moses, and the Compilation mentioned to have been sent down AFTER Moses appears<\/a> as the Qur\u2019an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What about the MESSAGE after Prophet Moses\u2019 and before the Qur\u2019an, namely, Prophet Jesus\u2019 Message, peace upon both?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For an answer to that question, we need to reread Prophet Jesus\u2019 story in \u2018the Family of Imran,\u2019 and especially HQ 3:47-51<\/a>, in Yusuf Ali\u2019s<\/a><\/em> explanation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And (appoint him) an apostle to the Children of Israel, (with this message)\u2026\u2026\u201d <\/strong>till end of verse 49.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“\u2019(I have come to you), to attest the Law which was before me. And to make lawful to you part of what was (Before) forbidden to you\u2026\u201d<\/strong> till end of verse 50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you notice the answer, dear Reader?  Jesus, peace upon him, was a Messenger to the Children of Israel<\/em>.  He had come to \u2018attest the Torah before him (Moses\u2019 Compilation), confirming parts and relaxing others, to guide the lost sheep of Israel back to their Lord, and ease the burden which they had incurred.  So, although his was a separate Revelation, it had virtually no new laws to fulfil, rather, it had exhortations, sermons of admonition and counsel, complementing the law of the Torah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here we might recall Lady Khadijah\u2019s Christian cousin, Waraqah Ibn Nawfal, who is reported by Bukhari<\/a> to have said when Khadijah took the trembling Prophet to meet him after his first encounter with Angel Gabriel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat is the same angel whom God sent to Moses. Should I live till you receive the Divine Message, I will support you strongly.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we know, Moses is the prime Prophet and Messenger for the Children of Israel, after whom there were many Prophets, Prophet Jesus being one of them.  Christians initially followed the Torah, but diverged away from it in time.[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is interesting to note the \u2018affinity\u2019 between the two Messengers Moses and Muhammad, peace upon both. This is one reason why many Muslims regard what Moses said in the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 18:15) to be an allusion to Muhammad; being a descendent of Isaac\u2019s brother, Ishmael, Prophet Muhammad would fit the description \u2018of their brethren:\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verse 17 then goes on to warn those who deny, and to reassure Prophet Muhammad, peace upon him, letting him know what the nature of things actually is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most people do not\/ will not have faith!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

REFLECTIVE PAUSE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us pause here for a moment, if only to appreciate the fact that we are NOT of \u2018most people\/\u0623\u0643\u062b\u0631 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0627\u0633\u2019 in general, inshaAllah!  This is the first time we encounter this statement: \u201c\u2026 but most people\/ Cognizant Humans do not\/ shall not have faith and trust<\/em>.\u201d  It appears again at the end of the verses HQ 13:1; 40:59<\/a>.[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here we are, making an effort to understand God\u2019s Message to us, coming together for that purpose in faith and trust, knowing that what was revealed to our beloved Messenger is Al Haqq\u2026 and that the Hour is undoubtedly approaching\/ \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0627\u0639\u0629 \u0644\u0627 \u0631\u064a\u0628 \u0641\u064a\u0647\u0627..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, if we are, God-willing, NOT of \u2018most people,\u2019 not of the \u2018katheer\u2019 who have no faith, we must therefore try hard to be of \u2018the few\/ al qaleel\u2019<\/em> since, from the later generations\/ al aakhireen<\/em>,\u2019 there will only be a few who would get to \u2018Janaat al na3eem<\/em>,\u2019 the Gardens of Bliss!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is helpful to know which qualities are enjoyed by the few\/ al qaleel<\/em>, for we definitely aspire to be among them: See \u0625\u0644\u0627 \u0642\u0644\u064a\u0644\u0627<\/a> and \u0648\u0642\u0644\u064a\u0644<\/a>.. [6]<\/sup><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are blessed to have stopped and taken notice of this Qur\u2019anic expression![7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, we must take heed from what our Lord-Sustainer reported to us of SheyTaan\u2019s promise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(He <\/strong>(SheyTaan) said: “Do You see (what I shall show) You,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

this which You have ennobled over me?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If You would delay me to the Day of Resurrection,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will surely pluck out<\/u> his descendants <\/strong>(with my jaws), except for a few!”[8]<\/sup><\/strong><\/sup><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Verses 18-22 should be read and understood together, for they speak of a certain category of people, those who are deeper in dark \u2018thulm\/ wrongdoing\u2019 than anyone else!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Verse 18<\/a> we read the words \u2018And who is of more dark \u2018thulm\/ wrongdoing\u2019 than one who invents lies about God or in God\u2019s name?\u2019  Then the verse specifies that this worse category of Wrongdoers -when brought before God- shall have witnesses reinstating their crime of lying about God, calling for God\u2019s banishment to be upon \u2018Al Thaalimeen\/ \u0627\u0644\u0638\u0627\u0644\u0645\u064a\u0646:\u2019[10]<\/sup><\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Verse 19<\/a>  we see other major crimes they have committed (besides lying about God): <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They turn people away from the path of God \u2018sabeel Allah\u2019 (\u0633\u0628\u064a\u0644 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647)<\/a> AND seek to redirect others, tilting them away from it.  The verse ends by saying that they, in the Hereafter, they are denying\/ kaafiroon (they\/ \u0647\u064f\u0645 is mentioned twice for emphasis). These four characteristics are publicly perceivable, and we shall refer to them shortly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verses 20<\/a>– 21<\/a>– 22<\/a>–  give us 8 other characteristics which are publicly imperceivable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us combine all the CHARACTERISTICS of those who have committed the UTMOST WRONGDOING:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-They invented lies about God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-They turned people away from His path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-They steered people towards their own leanings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-They denied the Hereafter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-They never were able, even on earth, to evade (their recompense).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-They never had any protectors beneath God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Manifold shall be their suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-They were unable to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-They were not seeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-It is they who have failed their own Selves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Depleted for them is all that they had invented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Unfailingly: THEY ARE THE SORRIEST LOSERS \u00a0(\u0627\u0644\u0623\u062e\u0633\u0631\u0648\u0646) in the Hereafter!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aside: These verses help us understand what is happening around us in a new light:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turning people away from the path of God might not be easy when people have faith and trust in God, but there certainly are ways where it becomes easier: <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It becomes easier when <\/a>people are steered, made to see defects<\/em> in what they believe to be God\u2019s path.  Evidence for that is provided by creating or exaggerating the misdeeds of faith-leaders and their teachings, and in maligning Prophets or Holy Compilations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it becomes so much easier when people of faith, faith-leaders or their teachings are <\/a>truly defective. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disenchantment and disappointment <\/a>make many think that God\u2019s path is in itself defective and not worth pursuing. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turning people away from the path of God becomes easier when people are steered to blindly over-emphasize ideals such as kindness and justice, while clearly misguided people are made to seem oppressed<\/em> by faith-leaders and their teachings, or by Prophets or Holy Compilations.  <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it becomes so much easier when people of faith, faith leaders, or their teachings actually are<\/em> unjustly oppressing the misguided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Distracting people away from God in the name of these values and ideals makes many believe that God\u2019s path is in itself defective and not worth pursuing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In both cases, God\u2019s path -to many- is made to seem \u2018tilted,\u2019 as they steer people away \u20183awj\/ <\/em>\u0639\u064e\u0648\u0652\u062c<\/em>\u2019[11]<\/sup><\/strong><\/sup><\/a> as one would steer cattle.  It is such Wrongdoers\/ Thalimeen that are the sorriest Losers.  Their denial of the Hereafter is what made all their worldly misdeeds seem pleasing.  Had they had faith in the Hereafter, they would have seen the truth.<\/em>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, after this eight-verse Dissuasion comes one verse of beautiful Persuasion!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verse 23<\/a> presents a stark contrast to all the above, showcasing (in just a few words) the reward of Those who Attained Faith and Trust, performed Good deeds, and humbled themselves to their Lord.  Three beautiful qualities which made them earn the words: It is THEY who are THE COMPANIONS of the Garden, comfortable therein they shall abide.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verse 24<\/a> brings this section to a close, giving us the similitude of both groups and how they made use of their faculties: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One group is like the blind and deaf, the other is like the sighted and hearing.  Then come the two rhetorical questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are they equal in comparison?[13]<\/sup><\/strong><\/sup><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, do you (all) not remember?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After these powerful ten verses (15-24) the Qur\u2019an returns to the story of Noah which was last mentioned in HQ 10: 71-73.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.  The next 3 verses 25<\/a>– 26<\/a>– 27<\/a> take us back to the story of Prophet Noah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here we notice how he tells them that he fears for them the suffering of a painful day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, it is in this Surah that we hear something similar three times:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11:3; 11:26; 11:48.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first was said by the Messenger Muhammad peace upon him to his people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second here said by Prophet Noah, and the third by Prophet shu3eyb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason for these historical references is that the arguments against Noah by his own people are similar to the arguments against Muhammad by his own people, peace upon both.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next time we shall mention Prophet Noah\u2019s lengthy argument in response to his people, which made them say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But today we\u2019ll conclude by noting that these arguments never change:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deniers will reiterate their opinions, with regard to God\u2019s Messengers and their followers, saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

–You are only human, like us. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

–Your followers are of the lower classes.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

-We owe you nothing; you are not superior to us.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

-We think you are liars.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we could put all what they said in a nutshell and offer a diagnosis as to WHAT holds such people back from opening their eyes and ears to Faith\u2026 our \u2018one word diagnosis\u2019 would be: Arrogance<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, such verses serve to inform both the Faithful and the Deniers of what had taken place so that they would both learn, and then be either reinforced OR forewarned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For us, God-willing, being of Those who attained faith\/ \u0627\u0644\u0630\u064a\u0646 \u0622\u0645\u0646\u0648\u0627 .. we are being reinforced, alHamdulilLah!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enough said!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our next Reading is from HQ 11:28-44<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
