{"id":209,"date":"2020-11-22T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-11-22T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iqralaan.wordpress.com\/?p=209"},"modified":"2022-12-30T09:27:30","modified_gmt":"2022-12-30T05:27:30","slug":"day-13-hq-2-164-176-pages-2526","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iqraprinciple.com\/ar\/day-13-hq-2-164-176-pages-2526\/","title":{"rendered":"HQ 2: 164-176; pages 25+26"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Welcome Friends:&nbsp; <em>Ahlan wa sahlan<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">With each day\u2019s Reading we think even more deeply about ourselves and realize how far we have strayed from God\u2019s beautiful Message to Humanity.&nbsp; As Cognizant Humans, we should have recognized its worth.&nbsp; As Muslims, we should have made more effort to follow its guidance and values.&nbsp; As Arabs however, we should have understood it better and projected the correct set of priorities. Misunderstanding the Qur\u2019an is a major cause of many of our troubles today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">It is up to any Cognizant Human who truly cares for the well-being of Humanity to help setting the record straight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>COMMENTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>s Reading starts with a beautiful verse which tells us about creation, ending with the statement: .. \u201cin this are <em>ayaat<\/em>, \u2018Messages\/Signs,\u2019 for people who <em>ya\u2019qiloon<\/em> \u2018use their reason\/that are wise\u2019 (Asad &amp; Ali respectively).<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The root-verb \u2018aqala\u2019 (as mentioned in Day 8) is about tying something and securing it (like tying a camel to a post).&nbsp; The argument is that people who use their intellect could \u2018secure\u2019 knowledge\u2019 and should recognize The Creator in all that is around them; everything in creation is evidence of Him.&nbsp; Indeed, as verse 165 indicates, it is He Whom the Faithful love above all else, whereas others would perhaps love other creatures or concepts they set up and consider equal to God.&nbsp; What this verse tells us indirectly is that the Faithful are those who love God after having, in fact, recognized Him on many levels <em>including the intellectual<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The wrongdoers, on the other hand, who loved and worshipped other than God, if they were to see suffering, they would realize that all power is God\u2019s Alone. &nbsp;\u2018Athaab\/suffering\u2019 was translated by Asad as \u2018punishment\u2019 and by Ali as \u2018penalty.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-list\"><li>Verses 166-167 offer a glimpse into a likely argument between two parties, each seeking to absolve itself of responsibility: the \u2018followers\u2019 and the \u2018followed.\u2019&nbsp; But this scene takes place when it is too late to make amends, when the most bitter fruit of their deeds, is Regret.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-list\"><li>Verse 168 begins with a call: \u2018O Cognizant Humans\/Naas!\u2019 Here, God calls upon all of us, not just the Faithful, welcoming us to partake of what is on earth, unbound and wholesome, and not to get carried away, \u2018following the missteps of the Deviant,\u2019 partaking of that which is harmful.<a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Both Asad and Ali translate \u2018Halal\u2019 as Lawful, but in this instance I prefer the word \u2018unbound\u2019 with its wider connotation, seeing that \u2018Halal\u2019 comes from \u2018Halla\u2019 a root verb which means \u2018to undo, to unbind.\u2019<a href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp; Their translation is correct too, for when something is \u2018lawful\u2019 it is not tied by law. I do prefer the term \u2018unbound\u2019 however since the call is for Humanity at large, at a time preceding any set laws, and furthermore, laws do differ from one community to another.<a href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-list\"><li>Verses 168-169 refer to an important subject, discussed by M. Asad in footnote no. 137:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThis refers to an arbitrary attribution to God of commandments or prohibitions in excess of what has been clearly ordained by Him (Zamakhshar\u012b). Some of the commentators (e.g., Muhammad \u2018Abduh in Man\u0101r II, 89 f.) include within this expression the innumerable supposedly \u201clegal\u201d injunctions which, without being clearly warranted by the wording of the Qur\u2019\u0101n or an authentic Tradition, have been obtained by individual Muslim scholars through subjective methods of deduction and then put forward as \u201cGod\u2019s ordinances.\u201d<\/em> End quote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Even today, it is common for certain people (often titled \u2018scholars\u2019) to use subjective self-serving arguments in disregard of the original meaning of words in their Holy Book, to put forward certain injunctions and call them \u2018God\u2019s ordinances.\u2019&nbsp; This has happened throughout history, wherever injustice and aggression paraded itself as a \u2018Divine Law.\u2019&nbsp; It has happened wherever young devotees serving a narrow ideology resorted to indiscriminate killing of innocents, saying they did so in the \u2018name of God.\u2019&nbsp; It has happened in all faiths (although historically less in Islam than others), with glaring examples committed by people who believe themselves \u2018chosen\u2019 for \u2018divine missions.\u2019&nbsp; Indeed, if we considered ourselves among Those Who Attained Faith\/\u0627\u0644\u0630\u064a\u0646 \u0622\u0645\u0646\u0648\u0627 &nbsp;to whom the Qur\u2019an is addressed, we should be more discerning of what is indeed mentioned in the Qur\u2019an and bring that knowledge to areas of ignorance, and we should be vigilant and outspoken against all trespasses committed in God\u2019s name.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-list\"><li>Verses 170-171 reproach those who blindly follow their forefathers, and those who hear without actually listening or using reason.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-list\"><li>&nbsp;Verses 172-173 now calls upon Those Who Attained Faith specifically, telling us to partake of the wholesome bounty He has provided for us, and to appreciate TO God (lil-Lah),<a href=\"#_ftn4\">[4]<\/a> if indeed it is He Whom we worshipped. The verses then <em>give us a shortlist of prohibitions<\/em>.&nbsp; These prohibitions may be consumed only in dire need, without desire or indulgence; just the minimum requirement for survival.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-list\"><li>Verses 174-176 discuss those who suppress what God has revealed in their Book\/Compilation.&nbsp; Here the Qur\u2019an tells us that they have exchanged error for guidance and suffering for forgiveness.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The last part is a statement regarding this Kitaab\/Compilation. It is sent down in Truth, and those who are set against it are most deeply in the wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Asad calls it \u201cDivine Writ\u201d- Ali calls it \u201cBook,\u201d&nbsp; but I prefer to translate it as Compilation, from the root verb \u2018ka ta ba\u2019 to compile or put together to form a unit (kitaab).&nbsp; A team of horses, or an army unit, is called \u2018kateeba.\u2019<a href=\"#_ftn5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction is very important: The Revelation has always been a \u2018Kitaab\u2019 compiled in memory.&nbsp; It was not made into a \u2018Book,\u2019 compiled on paper until much later.&nbsp; The Revelation we read online today is NOT a book.&nbsp; Neither is what we hear on the radio or what is on CD or DVD or online through websites, or apps.&nbsp; These are all \u2018compilations.\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>E<\/strong>nough said!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Our reading for tomorrow is from verse 177-186.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Peace unto all.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"#_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> Harm is in our unrestrained consumption of Earth\u2019s resources, in depleting its flaura and fauna, in eating what is unwholesome or has been \u2018bound\u2019 by law, in behaviors that cause us physical or spiritual injury, or break our communities apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">It is interesting to note that the word \u2018harm\u2019 itself -by virtue of its pronunciation and meaning- seems to have had its origins in the Arabic \u2018Haram,\u2019 although you would hardly find Etymology books admitting to Arabic influence. Etymology relates the word to Old English \u2018hearm,\u2019 meaning &#8220;hurt, pain; evil, grief; insult, from the Proto-Germanic \u201charmaz.\u201d Proto-Germanic, however, is NOT attested to by any surviving texts, but rather, is a reconstruction of a<em> theorized <\/em>common ancestor<em>, hypothesized <\/em>to have been spoken as a single language, which <em>needs to have existed due to the omission of Arabic as a possible common ancestor.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Nevertheless, there can be no complete omission of Arabic: Arabic was the Lingua Franca in many parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa for many centuries, especially during the golden age of Islam (8th-14<sup>th<\/sup> century).
