With our next reading we begin Section 3 of the Qur\u2019an, which is divided into 30 sections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are progressing slowly and surely, with God\u2019s grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COMMENTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Having initially called upon Those who Attained Faith in Verse 228, we now find Verse 238 continuing its address to them, telling them to uphold[1]<\/a> and maintain[2]<\/a> communion\/prayers\/relationships in general, then specifically mentioning THE central\/balanced\/wusTaa[3]<\/strong><\/a><\/em> communion.  This verse has been explained in several ways, see Yusuf Ali and Muhammad Asad. Some have taken this to mean the Asr\/afternoon prayer (which is the third among five), while others have said that it is about performing all prayers in the best, most balanced way.  Here we recall Verse 2:143, which had honored the first recipients of the Qur\u2019an by telling them that God had rendered them a central and balanced community, \u2018Ummatan Wasatan,\u2019 so as to bear witness over all mankind,  and to stand steadfast before God in sincere devotion. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    These regular prayers which Those Who Attained Faith (Allatheena-Aamanu) perform daily are the physical and mental \u2018time-out\u2019 we take from worldly matters to enter a state where we become conscious of our Creator alone and of our relationship with Him.  Ideally, these acts of worship build our self-confidence and will-power, enhance our spirituality, strengthen family and community ties, and enable us to be more generous towards others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Prayer, or \u2018standing steadfast before God,\u2019 is so important that devotees can pray in any manner suited to their physical ability, for it is the soul which seeks its Creator during prayer.  That is why we often observe elderly people praying while seated, and invalids praying while lying in bed.  There also is a version suited to times of battle.  When surrounded by danger, devotees can perform a condensed form of prayer, where they take turns prostrating, traditionally called \u2018Salatul Khawf,\u2019 (Prayer in times of Fear: HQ4:101-102).  There actually are many other prayers, whether it be to offer gratitude or penance, during Ramadan or Eid, to seek guidance for oneself or blessings upon a departed soul.<\/em><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
      1. Verses 240-243 are about maintaining the widow and the divorcee.  An interesting concept touched upon here is the concept of \u2018ma\u2019roof\u2019 and \u2018munkar\u2019 (\u0627\u0644\u0645\u0639\u0631\u0648\u0641 \u0648 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0646\u0643\u0631). Yusuf Ali translates the word \u2018ma\u2019roof\u2019 as \u2018reasonable\u2019 in both verses, while Asad translates it first as \u2018lawful manner\u2019 (240), and in the next verse as \u2018goodly manner\u2019 (241). <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        \u2018Ma\u2019roof\u2019 from the verb \u2018arafa\u2019 literally means to feel reassured by something; the opposite of which is \u2018Munkar,\u2019 or intimidating.[4]<\/a>  Depending on usage, I think we might safely translate this concept as the \u2018Mutually Acceptable, and Mutually Objectionable.  This concept is just as important as it is broad, but has nevertheless set a guideline for the community, whose duty it is to \u2018enjoin the \u2018Ma\u2019roof\u2019 and to forbid the \u2018Munkar.\u2019  These two words are mentioned together \u0645\u0639\u0631\u0648\u0641 \u0645\u0646\u0643\u0631  no less than 9 times in the Qur\u2019an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. An important question comes to mind:  What does it mean when God says that a widow might eventually do with herself what she wills in an \u2018acceptable\u2019 manner, or that a divorcee should be given maintenance according to what is \u2018acceptable\u2019 at any given time?  It means that such a society is a vibrant one, setting standards that serve the needs of all its citizens, and are therefore mutually accepted by them.  It is Consultation or \u2018Shura\u2019 \u0634\u0648\u0631\u0649\u2019 (HQ 42:38) which should be setting these standards according to civic requirements, with heavy women\u2019s presence in family (which unfortunately often isn\u2019t the case).  Nevertheless, \u2018Ma\u2019roof,\u2019 is a Right, and the onus<\/em><\/strong> for fulfilling it is upon the shoulders of the Aware “\u062d\u0642\u0627\u064b \u0639\u0644\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u062a\u0642\u064a\u0646”.  <\/em><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
          1. Verse 242, immediately after that, speaks of God making clear His Signs \u2018so that you might secure knowledge \u0644\u0639\u0644\u0643\u0645 \u062a\u0639\u0642\u0644\u0648\u0646.\u2019<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
            1. Verses 243-248 give us historical narratives by which we can learn lessons. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

              Verses 243-244 are well-explained by Muhammad Asad who notes, regarding the words \u201cand \u2018qaatilu\/fight\u2019 in God\u2019s way\u201d that the topic is \u2018a just war in self-defense against oppression or unprovoked aggression.\u2019 Ali calls this \u2018jihaad,\u2019 and tells us \u2018to be under no illusion about it.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              This certainly is an important topic, and we will speak of it again.  For now, let\u2019s just note the meaning of the imperative verb \u2018qaatilu\/fight,\u2019 which appears in the Qur\u2019an eleven times in plural, once in singular.[5]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

              From the root verb \u2018qatala,\u2019 it is about humiliating\/humbling someone and also about causing them to die.  That gives us a good idea as to the purpose of engaging in \u2018qitaal\u2019 a fight or battle with enemies; to humble the foes, not necessarily to \u2018kill\u2019 them.  This meaning is so obvious in the rest of the definition, when one of the oldest lexicons gives example of a maiden who \u2018taqattalat\/humbled herself\u2019 to a man so that he became enamored with her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Today, in our colloquial Arabic, we say: I \u2018qataltu\u2019 myself .. or he \u2018qatala\u2019 himself to get something done, meaning tried very hard.  And we often say that two people \u2018taqaatalu\u2019 over something, meaning they both vied for it with great gusto, usually with no weapons on hand, nor any intention to kill each other.  Nevertheless, we should not be disempowering this powerful word.  We must try to understand each word as per its original meaning, within the context it appears, so as to grasp what it was intended to convey.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Here we may think of revisiting Verse 2:191, now that we understand the root-verb \u2018qatala\u2019 better.\u00a0 The meaning of that verse doesn\u2019t change, but this definition helps us understand that one can do whatever necessary to evict anyone who had usurped your homes\/land.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
