{"id":237,"date":"2020-12-13T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-13T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iqralaan.wordpress.com\/?p=237"},"modified":"2026-05-05T07:38:53","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T03:38:53","slug":"welcome-friends-day-21-hq-2-249-25-pages-4142","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iqraprinciple.com\/ar\/welcome-friends-day-21-hq-2-249-25-pages-4142\/","title":{"rendered":"HQ 2: 249-256; pages 41+42"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Welcome Friends:&nbsp; <em>Ahlan wa sahlan<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">What a verse!&nbsp; Aayatul Kursi\u2026(2:55) \u0622\u064a\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0643\u0631\u0633\u064a\/ &nbsp;&#8216;Verse of&nbsp; Knowledge&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Before you switch off today, &nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tuBiSmW9r10\">please take time to listen to it,<\/a> read it in your own language on <a href=\"http:\/\/tanzil.net\/#2:255\">the Tanzil website<\/a>, and find out what Yusuf Ali, Muhammad Asad, and any commentator of your choosing says about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>COMMENTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>At the end of Verse 249 we note an important statement: \u201c\u2026.. and God is WITH the patiently perseverant\/persistent\u2026\u201d&nbsp; which also appeared in Q.2:153.&nbsp; This statement appears most on behalf of the Patiently Perseverant in the Qur\u2019an (four times), strengthening them when they feel at their weakest; God is WITH them.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-list\"><li>In our previous Reading we were introduced to a historical narrative (HQ 2:246) which continues in today\u2019s reading, about a post-Moses generation of the Children of Israel\/Jacob who asked for a king, after which they were split in their compliance to their king\u2019s command.&nbsp; Well-explained by both Yusuf Ali and Muhammad Asad, this is the story of Saul (Taloot \u0637\u0627\u0644\u0648\u062a) and his people, and the defeat of Goliath (Jaloot \u062c\u0627\u0644\u0648\u062a ) at the hands of Prophet David, peace upon him.&nbsp; However, there was one major difference between Ali\u2019s and Asad\u2019s explanation:&nbsp; \u2018Taboot\u2019 (\u062a\u0627\u0628\u0648\u062a) was translated by Yusuf Ali (and other commentators drawing upon Talmudic legend) as the \u2018Arc of the Covenant\u2019 whereas Muhammad Asad (who was himself an authority on the Talmud) simply called it \u2018bosom, or heart.\u2019 He cited \u2018Baydaawi\u2019s\u2019 explanation as well as one interpretation of \u2018Zamakhshari\u2019s\u2019 and says it indicates the Israelites\u2019 \u2018change of heart\u2019 (notes 239-250).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">3.&nbsp;&nbsp;Anyway, stories teach us important lessons through the experience of others, so what matters to us, is the lesson we can learn from this story.&nbsp; Yusuf Ali says in his note 286, that <em>while the Old Testament tells us all the details, the Qur\u2019an tells the parable.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">I beg to differ slightly here, in that the Qur\u2019anic content has all the details <em>we need to know<\/em>, unpolluted by human narration. Everything God says is \u2018The Haqq\/ Truth and Justice\u2019<a href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> (Q.6:73), and is not a similitude\/example unless He says so, mostly using the word \u2018mathal\/\u0645\u062b\u0644\u2019 as in Q.2:26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">And so, the narrative continues in today\u2019s Reading, verses 249-251. Muhammad Asad explains the latter part of verse 251 in his note 242: Lit., <em>\u201cwere it not that God repels some people by means of others: an elliptic reference to God\u2019s enabling people to defend themselves against aggression or oppression\u2026\u201d &nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><em>4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>And God informs His Messenger Muhammad, peace upon him, of such stories for he is, indeed, but one of those Messengers (see verse 252). &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Each of these Messengers was chosen for a mission (see verse 253); some given gifts or qualities which other messengers were not given, notable among them was Jesus the son of Mary, peace upon him, who -after his miraculous birth- was presented with clear signs and aided<a href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a> by the \u2018Holy Spirit,\u2019 or more literally \u2018Spirit of Holiness\u2019 (as Asad said; also in verse 2:87; note 71).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">In his comment 245 on the last part of Verse 253, he says <em>that the Qur\u2019an alludes to the inevitability of Dissension among human beings; it is the will of God that their way to the Truth should be marked by conflicts, and trial by error.<\/em>&nbsp; How true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Verse 254 is a call to Those Who Attained Faith to spend freely of God\u2019s bounties (not restricted to wealth; whatever we have of his bounties we must spend to help others).&nbsp; Verse 245 spoke of that being a \u2018loan\u2019 which we get back on Judgment day, multiplied manifold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Verse 255 \u201cAayatul Kursi\u2019 (\u0622\u064a\u0629 \u0627\u0644\u0643\u0631\u0633\u064a) is perhaps the best known and most memorized verse in the entire Qur\u2019an, second to the Opener \u2018Al Faatihah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Kursi\u2019 is explained as Dominion, Sovereignty, and according to Ibn Abbas it means \u2018Knowledge.\u2019<a href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cGod- there is no deity save Him,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>the Ever-Living, the Self-Subsistent Fount of All Being.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Neither slumber overtakes Him nor sleep.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>His is all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth\u2026\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>(<\/strong><strong>the Layers of; the&nbsp;insurmountable Mass of)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>His Knowledge overspreads the heavens and the earth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>and the upholding of both wearies Him not.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And He alone is truly Exalted, Magnificent.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Beautiful!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Read both Yusuf Ali and Muhammad Asad\u2019s explanations, and their notes (Ali: 296; Asad: 247,248).&nbsp; I feel that this verse is in itself \u2018THE Fount\u2019 which describes the relationship between God and Creation, and especially us humans; it is a relationship based on Life, and the purpose of sending His Messenger with THIS Message is to give us Knowledge by which&nbsp;we are&nbsp;\u2018enlivened &#8211;&nbsp; as another verse states (HQ 8:23):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>O you who have attained to faith! Respond to the call of God and the Messenger whenever he calls you unto that which will give you life; and know that God intervenes between man and [the desires of] his heart, and that unto Him you shall be gathered. Verse 2: 256 is one of the most-quoted verses by Muslims today when they allude to the manner in which Islam has traditionally dealt with people of other faiths; not forcing them to convert.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, Accountability cannot be enforced, which is why:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>\u2018\u2026there is no coercion in Accountability\u2026.\u2019<a href=\"#_ftn4\"><strong>[4]<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Studies into language and Qur\u2019anic context will show the word \u2018deen\u2019 rewinding itself back to its original meaning of \u2018accountability.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altafsir.com\/ViewTranslations.asp?Display=yes&amp;SoraNo=2&amp;Ayah=256&amp;toAyah=256&amp;Language=2&amp;LanguageID=2&amp;TranslationBook=7\">Asad\u2019s explanation (note 249)<\/a> he posits \u2018deen\u2019 as \u2018the contents of and the compliance with a morally binding law\u2026\u2019 and that the meaning depends on context, which could be \u2018religion,\u2019 however in the widest sense of the term.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The context in which Muslims have traditionally understood this verse is very important, and, as Asad says, it <em>\u201cdisposes of the widespread fallacy that Islam places before unbelievers the alternative of \u2018conversion\u2019 or the sword.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>E<\/strong>nough said!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tomorrow\u2019s reading is from verse <\/strong><strong>257-264<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Peace unto all!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"#_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> \u0648\u064e\u0647\u064f\u0648\u064e \u0627\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0630\u0650\u064a \u062e\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0642\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0633\u064e\u0651\u0645\u064e\u0627\u0648\u064e\u0627\u062a\u0650 \u0648\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0652\u0623\u064e\u0631\u0652\u0636\u064e \u0628\u0650\u0627\u0644\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0642\u0650\u0651 \u0648\u064e\u064a\u064e\u0648\u0652\u0645\u064e \u064a\u064e\u0642\u064f\u0648\u0644\u064f \u0643\u064f\u0646 \u0641\u064e\u064a\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0648\u0646\u064f \u0642\u064e\u0648\u0652\u0644\u064f\u0647\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0642\u064f\u0651 \u0648\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0647\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0645\u064f\u0644\u0652\u0643\u064f \u064a\u064e\u0648\u0652\u0645\u064e \u064a\u064f\u0646\u0641\u064e\u062e\u064f \u0641\u0650\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0635\u064f\u0651\u0648\u0631\u0650 \u0639\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0650\u0645\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0652\u063a\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0628\u0650 \u0648\u064e\u0627\u0644\u0634\u064e\u0651\u0647\u064e\u0627\u062f\u064e\u0629\u0650 \u0648\u064e\u0647\u064f\u0648\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0652\u062d\u064e\u0643\u0650\u064a\u0645\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0652\u062e\u064e\u0628\u0650\u064a\u0631\u064f \ufd3f\u0627\u0644\u0623\u0646\u0639\u0627\u0645: \u0667\u0663\ufd3e<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"#_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> \u2018aid\u2019and (\u0623\u064a\u062f) are indeed the same word!&nbsp;In Arabic, it means (to have and offer) strength and security, from which the Arabic word &#8216;yad,&#8217; <em>\u201c<\/em><em>Etymology: Middle English eyden, from Anglo-French aider, from Latin adjutare..\u201d&nbsp; <\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Scholars should look into this:&nbsp; What is the Middle English \u2018eyden\u2019 if not (\u0623\u064a\u062f\u064d) with \u2018tanween,\u2019 the diacritic mark? &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">As we continue our Qur\u2019anic Readings we will come across many other such words, CLEARLY of Arabic origin, when Arabic was, similar to English today, the <em>Lingua Franca<\/em> (the <em>vehicular<\/em> language that traversed the boundaries of its original community, to transfer information to other communities).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"#_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> &#8216;kursi&#8221; according to our Arabic lexicon, is from &#8216;karasa&#8217; to stack or pile; to AMASS.&nbsp; A thick stack of papers is called &#8216;kurrasah.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;.<strong>\u0643\u0631\u0633<\/strong>)&nbsp; Note that the word \u2018deen\u2019 in the Qur\u2019an has no plural, the word for \u2018religion\u2019 in the Qur\u2019an being \u2018millah\/\u0645\u0650\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0629\u2019 or \u2018shir\u2019ah\/\u0634\u0650\u0631\u0639\u0629.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The Qur\u2019an speaks of \u2018God\u2019s Standard of Accountability\/Deen al-Lah\u2019 (Q.3:83), \u2018the Day of Accountability\/Yawmil-Deen\u2019 (Q.1:4), and tells us that indeed Accountability\/Deen \u2018shall befall\u2019 us (Q.51:6).&nbsp; But for those who understand \u2018deen\u2019 as \u2018religion,\u2019 the following combinations seem quite strange: \u2018God\u2019s religion\u2019 (as in Q.3:83)? \u2018The day of \u2018religion\u2019 (as in Q.1:4)?&nbsp; \u2018Religion befalling us\u2019 (as in Q.51:6)?&nbsp; That is when explanations\/translations had to be amended to fit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome Friends:&nbsp; Ahlan wa sahlan!
