{"id":263,"date":"2020-12-20T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-20T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iqralaan.wordpress.com\/?p=263"},"modified":"2022-12-30T09:27:30","modified_gmt":"2022-12-30T05:27:30","slug":"welcome-friends-day-24-hq-2-275-282-pages-4748","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/iqraprinciple.com\/ar\/welcome-friends-day-24-hq-2-275-282-pages-4748\/","title":{"rendered":"HQ 2: 275-282; pages 47+48"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Welcome Friends:&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Ahlan wa sahlan<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">In yesterday\u2019s reading there was mention in verse 273 of people who deserve our help, those who are needy but cannot travel<a href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> or move freely to earn a livelihood.&nbsp;Because they abstain from asking, they seem well-off to the untrained eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">People might be robbed of their land and livelihood, or lose it due to forces of nature; a person who believes in God would seek to mend such damage and help such victims even when they do not ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s reading continues, showing us how BEST to spend \u2018our\u2019 wealth and the resources we may \u2018control,\u2019 and gives us an ultimatum:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Greed breeds catastrophe!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>COMMENTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>\u201c<strong>Those who devour usury will not stand except as stands one by whom the Evil one has driven into madness\u2026\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;Yusuf Ali.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201c<strong>Those who gorge themselves on usury behave as he might behave whom Satan has confounded with his touch\u2026\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>Muhammad Asad.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">If we read these verses 275-281 with a view to what is going on in the world today, we\u2019ll understand better the analogy of being, in effect, thumped down by the Deviant one- or trampled \u201c\u064a\u062a\u062e\u0628\u0637\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0634\u064a\u0637\u0627\u0646\u201d <a href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> in a (vicious) manhandling \u201c\u0645\u0646 \u0627\u0644\u0645\u0633\u2033.&nbsp; This verse should be brought to people\u2019s attention, along with so many other verses that would, IF we had awareness\/taqwa, help us heal our world from the catastrophes that are \u2018thumping us down;\u2019 knocking us about; manhandling us!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Usury is defined in English dictionaries as: \u201cThe practice of lending money and charging the borrower interest, especially at an exorbitant or illegally high rate; an excessive or illegally high rate of interest charged on borrowed money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">In Arabic, the word \u2018Riba\u2019 is from the root verb \u2018raba\u2019 which simply means to heighten something, to climb atop something.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is quite significant, for the word \u2018Riba\u2019 on its own does NOT mean \u2018exorbitant or illegally high.\u2019&nbsp;&nbsp;This is why other verses such as HQ: 3: 130 specify \u2018exorbitance,\u2019 adding two adjectives:&nbsp;(\u0623\u0636\u0639\u0627\u0641\u0627\u064b \u0645\u0636\u0627\u0639\u0641\u0629)\u2018<em>multiplied and re-multiplied<\/em>.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The lexicon of \u2018Lissanel Arab\u2019 below<a href=\"#_ftn3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> explains the&nbsp;<em>concept of \u2018Riba\u2019<\/em>&nbsp;as not being unlawful when loans are not <em>conditional<\/em>&nbsp;upon greater returns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Both Yusuf Ali and Muhammmad Asad have good translations of this verse, as well as good arguments and notes that provide THEIR views on the entire subject of Usury.&nbsp;&nbsp;In his note 324, Y. Ali condemns usury in the strongest possible terms, but states that the definition he would accept is <em>\u201cundue profit made, not in the way of legitimate trade<\/em>\u201d\u2026.and he goes on to say that his definition \u201c<em>would exclude economic credit which is the creature of modern banking and finance.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;Many Muslim Jurists disagree, which is why we may NOT find all his notes intact in certain editions.<a href=\"#_ftn4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;As for Muhammad Asad, read his note 35, which takes us back chronologically to when the Qur\u2019an first spoke about \u2018riba,\u2019 in HQ: 30:39, (revealed <em>before<\/em>&nbsp;HQ 2:275), the verse discusses making an increase out of \u2018other people\u2019s wealth.\u2019&nbsp;&nbsp;In his note Asad tells us that \u201c<em>Islamic scholars have not yet been able to reach an absolute agreement on the definition of \u2018riba\u2019<\/em>\u2026\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;It is important for us to remember that&nbsp;Yusuf Ali\u2019s translation was&nbsp;published&nbsp;in 1938,&nbsp;while Muhammad Asad\u2019s was published in 1980.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">At any rate, the Qur\u2019an is absolutely clear on how Humanity should treat its children- we still remember the analogy in \u2018verse 2:266 of elderly parents suddenly seeing all the gardens and wealth they\u2019d left for their helpless children\u2026 going up in flames!\u00a0 Such is the compassion we should we feel towards one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-list\"><li>The following verses tell us more, HQ: 4:29:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cO YOU who have attained to faith!&nbsp;Do not devour one another\u2019s possessions wrongfully \u2013 not even by way of trade based on mutual agreement &#8211;&nbsp;and do not destroy one another: for, behold, God is indeed a dispenser of grace unto you! (29)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Interestingly, the vision the Qur\u2019an gave almost 1500 years ago, of \u2018devouring wrongfully\u2019 or \u2018gorging oneself\u2019 is almost IDENTICAL to the description given close to the time of this writing by one European magazine in its description of actions that perpetrated our ongoing economic crisis!\u00a0They called what was committed a \u2018<em>cannibalistic orgy,<\/em>\u2019 and also stated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cBy its definition, strict prohibition on \u201cusury\u201d and interest driven lending, Islamic banking did not employ traditional leverage and thus fared substantively better in a recession marked by a sharp contraction of credit and liquidity.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">http:\/\/europeancourier.org\/mo\/2009\/08\/22\/islamic-banking-performance-relative-success-or-failure-during-this-recession\/<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">We can read all about \u2018riba,\u2019 and&nbsp;Islamic Banking etc.. in Wikepedia. It seems that many are now looking to the Islamic model, and Wikepedia presents the Vatican\u2019s view:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe Vatican has put forward the idea that \u201cthe principles of Islamic finance may represent a possible cure for ailing markets.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islamic_banking\"><em>http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islamic_banking<\/em><\/a><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">We can only touch upon the subject here, always bearing in mind that the Qur\u2019an seeks\u00a0general Good for humanity.\u00a0\u00a0That is why we are supposed to help those in debt with our \u2018Zakaat\u2019 as well as our \u2018Sadaqaat,\u2019 as we recall from the meaning of\u00a0\u2018fil riqaab\u2019- \u2018those with yokes around their necks\u2019 (Blog Post Day 14).\u00a0\u00a0The following verse is quite explicit, calling people in debt \u2018al gharimeen\u2019:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Sadaqaat (offerings given for the sake of God) are [meant] only for the poor and the needy, and those who are in charge thereof, and those whose hearts are to be won over, and for the freeing of human beings from bondage,&nbsp;and [for] those who are over burdened with debts,&nbsp;and [for every struggle] in God\u2019s cause, and [for] the wayfarer: [this is] an ordinance from God \u2013 and God is all-knowing, wise. (HQ 9:60)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-list\"><li>Verse 279 warns of grave consequences for usury, something we have brought on ourselves that is so overpowering it might indeed be called a veritable \u2018Divine Assault.\u2019&nbsp;&nbsp;The only way to avoid that is to be content with our capital, neither wronging others nor being wronged.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-list\"><li>Verse 280-281 tells us that lending the needy should be with a view to forgiving the loan and considering it a \u2018sadaqah\u2019 when they are under duress to repay it, even as we think of the Day of our Return unto God.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-list\"><li>Verse 282 is the longest verse in the longest Chapter in the Qur\u2019an!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">It is also about the Loan, mandating that everything should be in writing with the presence of two witnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The Qur\u2019an mentions two witnesses and does not specify gender in 5:106, 65:2; 24:4, 24:6, also for the sighting of the moon for the beginning and end of Ramadan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">It is only in this case here (loans) that the Qur\u2019an stipulates two men witnesses, or one man and two women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">The final statement in Verse 282 is of great importance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">\u0648\u0627\u062a\u0651\u0642\u0648\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u0648\u064a\u0639\u0644\u0645\u0643\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647 \u2026.. \u201c\u2026\u2026. and be Aware of God and God will imprint\/teach you for God is of everything Knowing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Scholars have said that knowledge is of two kinds, \u2018kassbi\/earned\/acquired\u2019 by observation and experience, and \u2018ladunni\/inner knowledge\u2019 imprinted by God, as in Q.18:65.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">What this statement tells us is that Awareness OF GOD is THE path to true knowledge;&nbsp; we do our best seeking the acquired, even as we yearn and pray for what He imparts upon us!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>E<\/strong>nough said!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tomorrow\u2019s reading is from HQ: 2:283-HQ: 3:9.&nbsp;&nbsp;YES!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Our next reading indeed completes the longest Chapter in the Qur\u2019an, and starts us on the next!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Peace unto all!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"#_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> The verb \u2018daraba fil ard\u2019 literally means means \u2018hit the earth- hit the road,\u2019 ie. to travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"#_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> \u062e\u0628\u0637:&nbsp;&nbsp;
