Day 71; HQ6:100- 107 page 141<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Welcome Friends:&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Ahlan wa sahlan<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Today\u2019s Reading is about \u2018Shirk,\u2019 quite a topic!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>COMMENTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>1.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>Verse 100 tells us about what people tend to revere besides\/instead of God (\u2018partners\u2019&nbsp;\u0634\u0631\u0643\u0627\u0621), in this instance, the \u2018Jinn\u2019&nbsp;\u0627\u0644\u062c\u0646\u2013.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">From Yusuf Ali\u2019s note 929:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>\u201cThe root meaning of&nbsp;junna, yujannu,&nbsp;is \u201cto be covered or hidden\u201d, and&nbsp;janna yajunnu,&nbsp;in the active voice, \u201cto cover or hide\u201d, as in Surah 6:76. Some people say that Jinn therefore means the hidden qualities or capacities in man; others that it means wild or jungle folk hidden in the hills or forests. I do not wish to be dogmatic, but I think, from a collation and study of the Quranic passages, that the meaning is simply \u201ca spirit,\u201d or an invisible or hidden force.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Muhammad Asad also relates the word to its origin and refers us to two pages he wrote on the subject (Appendix III) in which he says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>\u201cIn the usage of the Quran, which is certainly different from the usage of primitive folklore, the term jinn has several distinct meanings. The most commonly encountered is that of spiritual forces or beings which, precisely because they have no corporeal existence, are beyond the perception of our corporeal senses a connotation \u2018which includes \u201csatans\u201d and \u201csatanic forces\u201d (shayateen \u2013 see note 16 on 15:17) as well as \u201cangels\u201d and \u201cangelic forces,\u201d since all of them are \u201cconcealed from our senses\u201d (Jawhari, Raghib).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">We have already discussed \u2018jinn,\u2019 the hidden, or imperceptible, (see <a href=\"https:\/\/iqralaan.wordpress.com\/2021\/02\/07\/welcome-friends-day-44-hq451-65-pages-8788\/\">Blog Post Day 44<\/a>), and know that a lush garden enclosed -or hidden by its own foliage- is a \u2018jannah,\u2019 an unborn child is a \u2018janeen, and we also know that germs, bacteria, micro-organisms, etc.. are \u2018jinn\u2019 because they cannot be observed by the naked eye.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">As for the spiritual, these matters are \u2018gheyb,<sup> <\/sup>\u2018 so we can never prove them one way or the other, although the damage which superstition wreaks upon our lives is unfortunately quite real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">I have attached in the footnote<a href=\"#_ftn1\" id=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>&nbsp;what Asad referred to in Appendix III, from the lexicon \u2018<em>Mufradaat alfaathul Qur\u2019aan\u2019<\/em>&nbsp;by Al-Raghib Al-Isfhani, who died in 503 A.H.\/1109 A.D.&nbsp;&nbsp;I have translated here the most interesting part of this lengthy explanation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>\u201cJinns, they say, are two kinds; the spiritual entities which are completely hidden from all human senses and perception, in which case this will include the Angels and the Deviants.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Therefore all Angels are Jinn, but not all Jinns are Angels\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>This definition is more than 900 years old.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>Here we note that, although the Qur\u2019an often mentions the creation of al Insaan\/the Cognizant Human (from earth matter, his Cognizance being \u2018quickened\u2019 by the \u2018RooH\/Spirit\u2019) and mentions the creation of al Jaan<a href=\"#_ftn2\" id=\"_ftnref2\">2<\/a> (from fire), the Qur\u2019an does not mention how Custodians\/Angels were created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">This also helps answer certain questions and explain certain Qur\u2019anic verses, such as today\u2019s Reading, HQ 6:100, where the Qur\u2019an criticizes those who have \u2018associated\u2019 Jinns with God, making out of them \u2018sons and daughters\u2019 of God.&nbsp; It seems they were referring to Custodians\/Angels as we understand from other verses (HQ17:40; 37:150; 43:19.).&nbsp; Asad says in his note 87:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><em>\u201c[Lit., \u201cthey have invented for Him (or \u201cfalsely attributed to Him\u201d) sons and daughters without having any knowledge\u201d: a reference to the beliefs of the pre-Islamic Arabs who regarded the angels as \u201cGod\u2019s daughters\u201d (a designation which they also applied to certain of their goddesses), as well as to the Christian view of Jesus as \u201cthe son of God.\u201d<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">I prefer not to go into issues of \u2018gheyb;\u2019 it is best to say \u2018Allahu a3lam\u2019 and leave it at that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">2.&nbsp;&nbsp;Verse 101-103 gives us a few of God\u2019s beautiful attributes, \u2018Originator of the heavens and the earth&nbsp;\u0628\u062f\u064a\u0639 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0645\u0648\u0627\u062a \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0623\u0631\u0636\u2019 (Asad), \u2018Above all Comprehension yet Acquainted with all things\u0627\u0644\u0644\u0637\u064a\u0641 \u0627\u0644\u062e\u0628\u064a\u0631-&nbsp;\u2019 (Ali).&nbsp;&nbsp;Both translations are beautiful to read, but the Arabic even more so!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">He Alone is Creator of everything, and it is He Who should be worshipped!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Verse 104 is general, an address to people from their Lord; Ali translates \u2018baSa\u2019er-&nbsp;\u0628\u0635\u0627\u0626\u0631\u2019 as \u2018proofs,\u2019 while Asad as \u2018means of insight.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">4.&nbsp;&nbsp;Verses 105-107 are addressed to the Messenger Muhammad, peace upon him, and they begin by telling him that thus, in different ways, does God convey His Signs. Read from either Ali or Asad.&nbsp;&nbsp;There is a command to follow what was revealed to him from His Lord, and to turn away from the \u2018Mushriks,\u2019 the \u2018Associat-ers\/Shirkers\u2019 who ascribe divinity to other than God.&nbsp;&nbsp;In verse 107 is the reminder that, had God willed, they would not have associated.&nbsp;&nbsp;The verse ends by limiting the Messenger\u2019s responsibility to the delivery of the Message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;But what is \u2018Association\u2019 or \u2018Shirk\u2019?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">\u2018Shirking God by associating partners with Him,\u2019 or Shirk is, as scholars agree, the opposite of \u2018Tawheed,\u2019 which is worshipping God Alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Shirk is of two kinds: the Greater Shirk which is \u2018associating others in God-hood-&nbsp;\u0634\u0631\u0643 \u0627\u0644\u0623\u0644\u0648\u0647\u064a\u0629\u2019 when someone takes another to worship or supplicate to rather than, or besides, God.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Lesser Shirk, which is \u2018associating others in Lord-ship-\u0634\u0631\u0643 \u0627\u0644\u0631\u0628\u0648\u0628\u064a\u0629,\u2019 when one obeys, seeks to please, or&nbsp;follows another, such as peers, society, and one\u2019s own desire\/weakness..etc&nbsp;<em>instead<\/em>&nbsp;of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>Obedience to one\u2019s &#8216;hawa&#8217; (plummeting desire) is perhaps the most subtle \u2018Shirk\u2019 of all.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">6.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Desire\/Weakness covers the entire spectrum of choices in Life that might cause us to plummet down, to degrade ourselves as Cognizant Humans,&nbsp;all of which deserve Taqwa\/Awareness.&nbsp;When heedless, anyone can fall to desire or weakness, becoming a \u2018Follower,\u2019 and later perhaps attract others, becoming \u2018Followed\u2019 (HQ2:166-167).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Plummeting Desire\/Hawa is a strong Deity!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Hawa has the power to&nbsp;close one\u2019s mind&nbsp;<em>despite (the person&#8217;s) knowledge \u2018ilm\u2019 \/<\/em> \u0639\u0644\u0645<em> <\/em>which is one way of understanding the verse, by referring knowledge to the persons themselves.&nbsp; (Some commentators refer the knowledge to God- &#8216;as explained by both Ali and Asad.&nbsp; Copy + paste &#8220;\u0639\u0644\u0649 \u0639\u0644\u0645&#8221;; you&#8217;ll find the term refers to God at times, and to people at others.)<br>This is considered the worst kind of waywardness:&nbsp;\u0636\u0644\u0627\u0644<a href=\"#_ftn3\" id=\"_ftnref3\"><\/a>3&nbsp;<br>Straying and then getting irretrievably lost,&nbsp;DESPITE KNOWING&nbsp;BETTER!<br>We can all relate to that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>\u201cHave you (sing.) observed&nbsp;the person who took his Hawa\/ Plummeting Desire as his Deity, and whom God [thereupon] let stray despite (his) knowledge, and sealed-over his hearing, and his heart\/mind, and rendered upon his sight a veil? &nbsp;Who then can guide him, (of all who are) lesser than God? Will you all not then<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>remember (think back&nbsp;and bring to mind)? (HQ 45:23)<\/strong><a href=\"#_ftn4\" id=\"_ftnref4\"><strong><sup><strong><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/strong><\/sup><\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
