Our last post was full of thought-provoking scenes and important information which we pondered upon, and wished the whole world knew:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There we found that the single \u2018Kitaab\u2019 which God had sent was Gift-Guidance and Mercy for A People (Qawm\/\u0642\u0648\u0645) Who have Faith and Trust.  We realized that Those Who have Faith and Trust the Compilation are considered one People, together with the Messengers of God who delivered one Message, and all those who followed them; one brotherhood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If only everyone could realize that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us who are doing tadabbur own<\/em> this Brotherhood now so that it can make a real difference for future generations: If we ALL treated each other with awareness and understanding we\u2019d be paving the road to a lasting Peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PAGE 159:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.   <\/strong>Today\u2019s reading starts with Prophet Hud, peace upon him (long u sound; this is the first time he is mentioned).  He was sent to the tribe of \u2018Aad,\u2019 and (as we can see of what the Qur\u2019an quotes him saying) his message was almost identical to Noah\u2019s.  They both said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2026Worship God; you have no other god\u2026.!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But where Noah ended his call by telling them of his fears for them, Hud ended his call by asking them to be Aware.  Further comparison shows us the difference in their people\u2019s accusations of them; Noah was considered \u2018wandering in his mind\/in error\u2019 (Ali\/Asad), while Hud was considered a liar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obviously, their tribe had succeeded Noah\u2019s:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verse 69 says they were \u2018inheritors after the People of Noah\/heirs to Noah\u2019s people\u2019 (Ali\/Asad).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.  Hud\u2019s people pose him a question in Verse 70, which is a recurrent one, consistently posed by idolatrous tribes to God\u2019s Messengers, as we learn from HQ 16:35<\/a>.  To see more such rhetoric, check  Tanzil<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This too, was the Messenger Muhammad\u2019s experience with his<\/em> people, as we see in HQ 34:43<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hud responds to his people eloquently in verse 71.  Remember the definition of \u2018rijs\u2019 (in Blog Day 62<\/a>). He ends by telling them to await (what shall happen) as he too awaits.  The concept of \u2018awaiting\u2019 is a statement echoed by other Messengers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verse 72 brings to an end the short introduction to Hud\u2019s story by telling us that he was saved while they -who belied God\u2019s Signs- were obliterated.  We will encounter longer versions as we go along, but for now let\u2019s just note that only their houses remained  (HQ 46:25<\/a>)   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.  Verse 73 takes us to the story of Prophet Saleh peace upon him, with his<\/em> people, the tribe of Thamood\/Thamud.  See commentaries of Ali<\/a> and Asad<\/a> for their thoughts on this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.  Verse 74 tells us more on the distinctive traits of the tribe of Thamood\/Thamud. They had made enclosures of the plains which they farmed and held their livestock within, carving their dwellings into rock-mountains or hillsides.  The verb \u2018qasara\u2019 which originally meant \u2018limited (as in size) or enclosed (as in structure)\u20191<\/sup><\/a>  became related to \u2018palaces and castles\u2019 in our current understanding of the word, which is why both Ali and Asad said that they were building palaces and castles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.  We notice these details being given as signs of God\u2019s Bounty.  Why is that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because each Messenger had an impact relative to Human Progress at the time of his appearance.<\/em>  Hadn\u2019t God promised to send Guidance when the first two Cognizant Humans were sent out of the Garden to live their natural lives on this earth (HQ 2:38)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we read these verses recognizing humanity\u2019s background, we would better understand them.  When did people who lived inland first learn about flotation? Obviously, Noah\u2019s people did not know anything about that, which is the more reason for them to ridicule his Arc. Furthermore, they could never imagine that a human could float above water or swim in it, as was clear in the response of Noah\u2019s son to his invitation in HQ 11:43.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 When did humanity evolve, from the nomadic hunter-gatherer into an agricultural society?  Perhaps when they had the tools by which they could build permanent homes that were safe from the elements AND had the means to yield their own produce from the land.  Such was Prophet Saleh\u2019s time, one of agriculture and elaborate stone-carved dwellings.  They also seemed to hold power over their contemporaries (see Asad\u2019s<\/a> note).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6.  Verses 75-77 tell of a verbal exchange between the \u2018Arrogant\u2019 and the \u2018Weakened,\u2019 after which the Arrogant disobeyed Prophet Saleh\u2019s directions and hamstrung the she-camel \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0627\u0642\u0629\/al-naaqah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also defied Prophet Saleh, telling him to \u2018bring on\u2019 whatever it is he was warning them about!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Verses 78-79 bring this narrative to a conclusion; they were hit with exactly what they had been warned, and Prophet Saleh <\/a>sadly put in the last word:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2026. and I gave you good \u2018counsel\/advice\u2019 but you do not love \u2018good counselors\/those who give you good advice\u2019<\/strong> (Ali\/Asad).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word naaSiHeen\/\u0646\u0627\u0635\u0650\u062d\u064a\u0646, plural of naaSiH\/\u0646\u0627\u0635\u0650\u062d (usually translated as \u2018counselor\/adviser\u2019) was originally used to mean \u2018tailor,\u2019 seeing that tailors stitch material together to create a whole, or mend something that was torn (root-verb \u2018naSaHa\/\u0646\u064e\u0635\u064e\u062d\u064e).[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What this means is that a naaSiH is someone who counsels or advises BUT WITH THE AIM OF RESTORING what was torn or broken. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this case, Prophet Saleh had been attempting to restore -for the Arrogant among his people- their inborn relationship with their Creator, the relationship they had later torn to irreparable shreds by word and by deed (first declaring themselves \u2018Kaafiroon\/Deniers\u2019 and then disobeying God and hamstringing she-camel).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May God\u2019s Peace and Blessings be upon all His Messengers and Prophets.      <\/p>\n\n\n\n
